Dedicated Suica/RFID/NFC reader, but what about the e-ink cards on the horizon?

The Relet seems kinda like a technology looking for an application, particularly given that the SmartDisplayer screen is already in a few credit cards in the wild.

I'd be amazed if SmartDisplayer wasn't also to turn up in RFID/NFC travel cards like Suica and Pasmo within a couple of years.

Shinkansen / Bullet time....

This one's looking its age, mind, and Tokyo station was a heaving pit of humanity I wouldn't wish on anyone.

Please Do It At Home: Don't scratch your skin to a bloody pulp on the train...

I felt sorry for the guy at first, with such obviously bad eczema or whatever it was, but this three-minute clip is just part of a 20-minute ride in which he didn't stop raking his skin to pieces, eating bits of it, flicking other shards onto the floor and generally making everyone in the carriage squirm. It was particularly bad when he wiped the blood off his arms with that nasty-looking towel. It's a tough watch, but see if you can stick it out.

I think he forfeits his right to privacy for that one...

PS If you're curious, the 'Please Do It At Home' thing references these Japanese train ads: http://bit.ly/b3QJrL

Solar power to curb the '16 ships that emit as much sulfur as all Earth's cars'

That headline snippet was, for me, the standout in my research and chat with Greenpeace while preparing this story for CNNGo today.

Japanese scientists working to stop train carriages stinking like wet dogs

Bit of a geeky post this one, but we all know how certain train carriages smell decidedly peculiar, particularly during Japan's rainy season. That old upholstery just gives off a stink once the heaters fire up that's not conducive to hanging around.

Consequently, it's something the white coats at the Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRI) just up the road here in Kokubunji are working to eliminate.

Check out Tamami Kawasaki's paper in the December edition of the RTRI newsletter - the good stuff is in the PDF at the fourth link on the list (or right here). I particularly like the 'Smell Sampling' machine, complete with a place to rest your nose during the test...
