Would you take your iPhone abroad on Softbank's new flat-rate roaming plan?

Media_httpfarm2static_ejfqj

At up to ¥2,980 a day, it seems pretty expensive, but if you only use it for a few days during the trip it seems reasonable to me.

Business travelers excepted, do we really need to be always-on? Isn't avoiding that part of being on vacation?

Plus, who in Japan gets much more than a five-day holiday anyway? :-)

It's a lot less hassle than the old-school method of unlocking, buying a local prepaid SIM and all the rest. Am I alone in that?

DoCoMo, Softbank and KDDI reveal far too many phones to tell apart from each other...

Media_httpwwwnttdocom_demvr

Among the welter of typical (albeit well-specced) sliders and clamshells, there's a clear trend towards proper 'smartphones' but it's still difficult to see anything truly outstanding from any of the Big Three wireless companies.

On the tech front, DoCoMo's models that offer "Wi-Fi access-point capability" (i.e. they can become hotspots) are most interesting, but there's still a LOT of material to wade through to get to the core of the new wave of handsets.

Knock yourself out:

Very smart public use of Ustream by Softbank in Tokyo

Not totally sure about the "DJ booth that users can freely use..." though :-)

DoCoMo looking to get iPad 3G contract for Japan ahead of local iPhone carrier

Steve-jobs-420x0

At least, that's according to TradingMarkets.com:

"After losing the exclusive sales rights for the iPhone in Japan to... Softbank, DoCoMo appears bent on beating out its rival this time around."

Maybe so, but I can't see it succeeding -- Softbank is way too motivated and agile to let DoCoMo get its hands on Apple's latest lust bauble.

It's clear DoCoMo wants a slice of the iAction - see my brief chat with them about the iPhone 3G here - but getting the iPad seems unlikely at this point.

Anyway, we'll see soon enough...
