An outsider's look at Japan's 'new wave' of AR mobile apps
Good to see Sekai Camera get a mention, although I must admit I've yet to be terribly impressed by any Augmented Reality app. Nice and all that, but...

Commercial LTE services are due to start here in just six months, with that 37.5Mbps download speed looking pretty tasty right now...

From a capped maximum of ¥4,410 a month for all-you-can-eat data, EMobile will clearly have to move in response.
Their Pocket WiFi costs up to ¥5,380 for essentially the same thing. Restrictions, contract conditions, etc, as they say, apply, of course...

Among the welter of typical (albeit well-specced) sliders and clamshells, there's a clear trend towards proper 'smartphones' but it's still difficult to see anything truly outstanding from any of the Big Three wireless companies.
On the tech front, DoCoMo's models that offer "Wi-Fi access-point capability" (i.e. they can become hotspots) are most interesting, but there's still a LOT of material to wade through to get to the core of the new wave of handsets.
Knock yourself out:
It's the usual corporate guff, really, but there are a few nods to overseas expansion, such as the tie-up with Tata in India.

At least, that's according to TradingMarkets.com:
"After losing the exclusive sales rights for the iPhone in Japan to... Softbank, DoCoMo appears bent on beating out its rival this time around." Maybe so, but I can't see it succeeding -- Softbank is way too motivated and agile to let DoCoMo get its hands on Apple's latest lust bauble.
It's clear DoCoMo wants a slice of the iAction - see my brief chat with them about the iPhone 3G here - but getting the iPad seems unlikely at this point.

It's a nice phone for sure, and even has predictive text in two languages, but how it will fare in Japan is anyone's guess.
I can definitely see the 'infinite button' appealing to many, particularly with the SNS integration. Cost is likely to be the standard ¥40,000 or so, depending on the monthly plan.

It's a prototype for now, but the days of phones that only work in a few countries are numbered. Roll on LTE...
